Since 1993, the system’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) has been required to incorporate an explicit consideration of comparative effectiveness and cost effectiveness as a prerequisite for coverage. With U.S. policymakers searching for ways to rein in Medicare and Medicaid drug spending, the Australian experience assumes special relevance.
